Caruso generates Australian tax statements and the ATO's Annual Investment Income Report (AIIR) lodgement file from a single workflow: create a tax statement batch for your fund, populate the enrichment file, and generate.
Note: If you would like access to more information, Caruso can support and provide a detailed mapping of how the Caruso dataset is enriched and mapped to each part of the investor tax statement and the AIIR lodgement report. Contact our Caruso Support team to request this.
Before you start
Complete the fund's tax reporting settings on the fund record, including the AIIR Entity Sub-Type. This setting determines which statement type the fund produces (see below).
Confirm the financial year's distributions are finalised, as the enrichment file pre-calculates each holding's share from distribution data.
AMMA or SDS: which statement your fund produces
Every Australian tax statement is one of two types, produced automatically based on the fund's AIIR Entity Sub-Type:
| SDS | AMMA |
Statement title | Annual Tax Statement | Attribution Managed Investment Trust Member Annual Statement |
Applies to | Ordinary trusts | Funds in the AMIT regime (AIIR Entity Sub-Type of AMI) |
Basis | The investor is taxed on their entitlement to what the trust distributed | The trustee attributes taxable components to each member, whether or not cash was paid |
Part C third column | Taxable Amount | Attribution Amount |
The two statements do not show identical rows. The AMMA includes AMIT-specific content such as cost base adjustments, while the SDS includes a tax offsets section and additional cash distribution lines.
Note: All statement amounts are shown in whole dollars.
Step 1: Create the tax statement batch
Create an Australian tax statement batch for the fund and financial year. [verify against live article: navigation and labels]
Optionally filter the batch to a single unit class. With no filter, the batch covers the whole fund. Where unit classes are taxed differently, run a separate batch per class; each holding's share is calculated within its own batch.
Step 2: Populate the enrichment file
Download the batch's enrichment file, an Excel workbook with three tabs:
Fund Components tab
Enter the fund-level amount for each tax component, one row per field. The Notes column beside each field explains what it is and where it lands on the statement.
Holdings tab
One row per holding. The columns fall into two groups:
System columns — investor, holding and fund details populated from Caruso. You do not normally edit these.
Value columns — one per tax field, pre-calculated as the fund-level amount multiplied by the holding's % Apportioned for the report period. Each header is prefixed with its destination, for example Part B - 13Q - Franking Credit (9.83) or AIIR only - Royalties (9.135), so you can see exactly where each value will appear.
Every calculated cell remains editable, so you can override an individual holding's value where needed.
Two fields prefill automatically from holding data rather than a fund-level amount:
Tax withheld splits by the investing entity's primary tax residency: Australia (or no residency recorded) flows to Less: TFN amounts withheld, any other country flows to Less: Non-resident withholding tax.
Net cash distribution prefills from the holding's net distributions for the period.
Filer & Report Details tab
Fund-level AIIR lodgement details: run type, report type, and the filer's ABN, name, contact and address. These feed the AIIR file only and never appear on statements.
Important: Only update values within the existing rows and columns. Do not rename headers, or add or remove columns, as this can prevent the file from uploading correctly.
Step 3: Upload and generate
Upload the completed enrichment file to the batch and generate. [verify against live article: upload navigation and labels] Each holding receives its statement:
Part A shows the investor's details from their Caruso record, including a combined TFN/ABN row showing Provided when either a tax file number or business number is on file (or Exemption Provided for ATO exemption codes), and their tax residency.
Part B is the tax return summary, with each amount against its ATO tax return label (13Q, 18A and so on).
Part C breaks each component into cash distribution, tax paid/offsets, and the attribution amount (AMMA) or taxable amount (SDS).
The AIIR lodgement file
The AIIR is produced from the same batch, so no separate preparation is needed. Fields whose enrichment column is prefixed AIIR only are lodged with the ATO but never printed on statements. The AIIR remains a single scheme-level report per fund, and the file complies with the ATO's Electronic Report Specification v13.0.3. In ATO terms, the supplier is the fund manager, the investment body is the fund, and each investor data record is an investing entity.
